Despite of the name, hermit crabs are not as much related to true crabs as one may think. The most common aspect is the shell they live in. There are more than 500 different kinds of hermit crabs and many of them like to live in different places. Some could be found in deep sea water, another like to live on land and some of them live on trees.
Hermit crabs have long abdomens, what makes them too vulnerable to predators. Therefore, to stay protected, they search for abandoned shells they can hide in and carry along. As they grow, the shell becomes too small and they have to search for a bigger one.
Housing
Hermit crabs kept in captivity don’t need a big space as they don’t move that much. Right humidity and the temperature are much more important than the size of the aquarium. Because the crabs are used to higher temperatures, make sure you adjust the temperature in the tank (aquarium) to theirs need. On the other hand, they don’t like the direct sun, as they might overheat themselves.
Sand is another must. Hermit crabs love to burrow into it, so make sure there is thick enough layer on the bottom of the tank. The sort of sand does not really matter, just make sure you don’t use wood or gravel shavings.

The temperature in the tank should be between 22 and 27 ºC. It is recommended to use a special lamp that along with the thermometer inside the tank will keep the temperature right and you lovely crabs won’t get sick.
Hermit crabs are curious creatures and they love to climb, so add some pieces of wood or coral to create some obstacles the crabs can climb on.
Feeding
Hermit crabs are omnivore creatures, so they like to eat both, the plants and the meat. The best option is to get some commercial dry foods that are affordable and available in every pet shop. By feeding your crabs like this you will make sure the crabs are getting the right food.
In addition, you can feed your pets with some fresh fruits and vegetables, such as:
- mango
- melons
- spinach
- apples
- etc.
Note: Any uneaten food in the food dish should be removed each day.
Fresh and no-chlorine water is needed for drinking. Use some filtered water or rain water. Pre-filtered water should be available in every pet shop.
