Land hermit crabs can be basically found in tropic areas near the ocean. Even though they spend most of the time on land, they also spend some time in the water and they need some level of humidity to survive. While on land, crabs use the gills to take the moisture out of the air so they can breath.
Despite of the name, hermit crabs are not anti-social animals. Actually they love to be around in groups, so it would be perfect if you can get more than one. Also in the wild you can spot bigger groups of crabs. Some hermit crabs owners get these creatures in dozens and love to see how they get along in groups. So if you have tank of aquarium big enough, think of getting more than one.

The habitat in the wild
When preparing the tank (aquarium) for your new pets, keep in mind that crabs love to burrow, so it must be adjusted to replace their wild dwelling. Try to put more than just one shell inside, because as the crab grows, it will abandon the out-grown shell and find a new bigger one. Crabs are also curious creatures and like to move around, so add a lot of sand and some obstacles as rocks into the aquarium as well.
Because crabs have gills, they breathe the same way as fish do (by filtering the oxygen out of the water). When they grow up, they will hit the land and seek a suitable shell. This is the time when they start living in both land and water.
Temperature and humidity in the wild
Temperature and the humidity are the most important factors when it comes to the health. They don’t like the direct sun as they might get overheated. They also need some level of humidity so theirs gills can develop without problem.
Keep in mind all the facts mentioned when designing the habitat for your lovely pets. Try to adjust it to their needs so they can enjoy it and live a healthy and long life.
