hermitcrabcare3 What is a hermit crabHermit crabs are one of the most popular and most fascinating animals suitable for home care. Hermit crabs are perfect pets for several reasons. First of all, they don’t carry any known disease and second, they are hypo-allergenic thus are suitable even for those suffering from allergies.

Unlike other home animals, the care and maintenance for the crabs are easy and straightforward thus not time consuming. They don’t need much space and unlike other sea crabs they are not aggressive. Because of their social nature it is recommended to have more than one. Hermit crab just doesn’t want to be alone, even in the wild life they move and live together in groups.

Unlike true crabs, hermit crabs have soft abdomens. They are using abandoned shells as a protection from predators. As the crab grows, he has to seek out a new shell of proper size. When a hermit crab finds such a shell, it pulls itself inside it and leaves the head and some of the legs outside the shell.

There are different types of hermit crabs that grow in different sizes. The giant ones typically live along the Atlantic coast of the USA and in Asia. Land hermit crabs are commonly found in Florida and Asia. These crabs are collected and sold as home pets.

Hermit crabs are generally seen as a “throwaway pet” that would probably live only a few months up to one year. Contrary to popular belief, if the hermit crab is properly treated it can leave up to 23 years. Generally, and despite their name, hermit crabs are social animals that live in groups. In the wild life they live in colonies of hundreds.

What do they eat?

Hermit crabs love to eat all kinds of fresh vegetables and fruit such as lettuce, oranges or bananas. They also enjoy many other easy to get food such as popcorn, crackers or cereals. Do not feed them with processed and cooked food because some health issues may arise. Also hot and spicy food is not advised.

However if you want to be 100% sure you are giving your hermit crabs the right food, get some commercial hermit crab food from the stores. This will give them all the vitamins and minerals that are needed to keep them healthy.

It is advised not to feed them one they in a week so they can eat all food they have hidden in theirs cages.
